61kgs of marijuana confiscated in Lae

Lae police have confiscated 61 kilograms of marijuana during a drug bust last week.

The drugs confiscated are worth five hundred thousand kina in street value and can make more than half a million if dealing with overseas drug trafficking.

Police while doing a routine check atthe Lae Warf last Wednesday arrested two suspects from Southern Highlands transporting this marijuana’s bound for the New GuineaHighlands.

Sergeant Damien Andrews said this isthe biggest drug bust in Lae in 2013. He says since Januarythe Lae’s drug squad have made a number of related arrest but wasn’t able to stemthe problem.

Morobe province had also been featured prominently as a transition point for marijuana trafficking tothe ther regions in Papua New Guinea

Two weeks ago, Lae’s drug squad uprooted several marijuana plants and arrested one suspect atthe tent city area.

Lae’s drug unit operations to deterthe sales and trafficking of marijuana have been largely limited becausethe drugs unit immobility. Beth while police often confiscates large quantities like this, many more still make to buyers.
