By Jack Lapauve Jnr– EM TV, Madang

The National Government is pushing to grow the Biofuel diesel concept in the country through the production of fuel using coconut oil.

On Friday, National Planning Minister Charles Abel presented K2.3 million to the Madang Provincial Government for a pilot program on Karkar Island.

The money will be used to purchase a prototype vessel specifically designed for use in Papua New Guinea. The vessel will be used to help transport copra farmers on Karkar and the outer islands of Madang Province for biofuel production.

Planning Minister Charles Abel said the opportunity presents a milestone of helping copra farmers for a better market price and producing cheap fuel. He says the fuel could help PNG Power reduce its problems of blackouts and high cost operations.

The Madang Provincial Government will be working closely with PNG Biofuel, PNG Power, Kokonut Industry Koperesen, the Department of Aaaaagriculture and Livestock, and the Department of Planning and Monitoring to see the project become operational.
