Bisini Closes

With refurbishment groundwork soon to begin, the iconic Bisini Soccer Grounds held its' official closing and locking of the gate over the weekend, marking the end of an era for soccer in Port Moresby.

Former administrator and national coach, Stalin Jawa, and former women’s international Jennifer Popat were guests of honour.

 

Bisini Soccer Grounds has been the home of football in Port Moresby since the early post-independence period.

 

Many clubs have called Bisini home, from early names like Togelu and Guria, to newer additions like Manena and Golo.

 

Relationships have been forged over the years and this was expressed by former women’s international, Jennifer Popat, WHO’spoke at the event.

 

A pioneer in PNG women’s football, Catherine Davani, spoke of the differences between the players of old and the new crop of players. 

 

Some former players spoke of fond memories of the grounds while other new generation PNG players also felt nostalgic.

 

Guest of honour and former administrator, Stalin Jawa, acknowledged the many people over the years who contributed in one way or another.

 

President John Wesley Gonjuan was more optimistic on the future of grounds after its' development.
