One rapid growing change in the technology world today is the use of social media. Apart from being connected to the rest of the world, users should also know the importance of being responsible with the type of information they share and report through the medium.
This was the concern raised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Deputy Minister, Jailani Johari, at the launching of the 2015 World Communication Forum in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
The minister spoke to reporters with the message that social media users have the responsibility to ensure that any information reported or shared on social websites should have a positive social impact, and should not be baseless.
“It should not be because one wants to be an ‘instant news journalist’ and in pursuit of popularity, report on and disseminate false information, when by right, social media should be used as a platform for sharing positive information,” said Minister Jailani Johari.
Malaysia became the first Asian nation to host the WCF and Mr Johari hopes that the forum will be used as a platform in creating communication practitioners who are more ethical and responsible in disseminating accurate information.
