Cricket PNG on the Front Foot

By Jeremy Mogi – EMTV News, Port Moresby

After securing two Silver medals at the recent Pacific Games, Cricket PNG is now looking to ramp up preparations for further international exposure. This also follows on from the recent success of PNG’s professional side, the Barramundis, who performed with note at the recent World T20 qualifying event in the United Kingdom.

Our women’s side, the Lewas, looked like they were going to take home Pacific Games Gold before their shock loss to Samoa in the Gold medal match.

The same could be said for the men’s side, who were in devastating form early on during the competition, before Vanuatu outclassed the home side in the final.

Former Barramundis skipper Chris Amini recently stated the the PNG side will be a force to watch at future tournamen’s. And right he was, as the Barramundis made a tilt at the title prior to going down to Afghanistan in their final UK game.

It’s an exciting time for cricket in PNG. Amini Park, the home of PNG cricket headquarters, is also on the verge of a face-lift with plans for a modern facility designed to accommodate visiting teams as well as providing PNG with a grander home for themselves.
