Fisherman Islanders Celebrate Xmas

By Theckla Gunga – EM TV, Port Moresby

Fisherman Island, located within the Port Moresby South electorate, reported one mishap during their Christmas festivities where one man was arrested by the NCD Water Police after he was found drunk, and disturbing the peace in the village.

He was taken to Port Moresby and is now under police custody.

Apart from that, Christmas was traditionally celebrated well on the island.

Every year, a clan is appointed to host the Christmas celebrations and for this year, the activities were organised by the Kwamonuma clan.

It cost the clan at least K120, 000 to host the event.

The celebrations which continued on today included sporting games, meal sharing and spiritual worship. It attracted families living in other parts of the country, including Port Moresby.

So far, there were no records of Christmas casualties and the villagers are now planning a bigger celebration to welcome the New Year.

Fisherman Island is approximately an hour’s boat ride from Ela Beach. The community is comprised of five clans and a population of over ten thousand people.
