Iruba Enters Lae Hockey Grand Final

The Iruba Women's Hockey team have again booked a grand final berth in this year’s Lae Hockey 7 aside competition.

The Kairuku-dominated team defeated All Blacks 3-nil in the women’s preliminary finals on Sunday and will go head to head with the Lae-based Manus team, Rapatona, in this weekend’s showdown.

The preliminary playoffs for the womens division was dominated by a star-studded Iruba side, who gave their opponents, the All Blacks, a good run for the finals berth last weekend.

The All Blacks didn’t concentrate much on their drives, which saw Iruba taking out most of their attempts keeping them scoreless.

Iruba’s point scoring spree was led by Tatiana Boni while her fellow team mates, Taita Raoma, Tracey English, Mary Hebei and Caroline Mulina held off the All Blacks.

Iruba is a family team, formed in 1975 as a junior team for the Lae Hockey Association.

Over time, it has produced outstanding hockey players who have excelled in representing Papua New Guinea in regional tournaMen’s.

This weekend will rewrite another chapter in the history of the burning Irubas, when they take on strong rivals Rapatona in the grand final encounter.

The in-form Kairuku women’s hockey team have recouped their playing strength during last weekend’s game and are looking at maintaining a strong fitness level through to this Saturday when they face their rivals.
