Lae Students Mark Child Protection Day

More than 500 children and their parents celebrated Pikinini or Child Protection Day at St. Mary’s Primary School in Lae today.

The event was to provide advice to children and their parents on children’s rights.

The event was coordinated by Police Sergeant Ruth Murup from the Lae FSV Unit, and assisted by the Australian Federal Police.

The theme was: “Please protect me – I am the future of PNG”.

This is an initiative of the Family and Sexual Violence (FSV) Unit in Lae, together with other FSV committees, and the Australian Federal Police.

The event’s objective was to advise children and parents on the rights of a child.

This initiative started last year with more than 400 children attending without their parents.

The number grew this year with more than 500 attending with their parents.

Also participating were children from a remote village in Finschhaffen District, who were transported by Australian Federal Police to Lae, to celebrate the event.

The companies in Lae and other stakeholders also assisted in serving the children with food and goods.
