Madang Police Call for Public Support to Curb Robberies and Other Crime

by Rachel Shisei – EM TV News, Madang

A string of robberies over the past three months in Madang Province continue to put a strain on local police, who say that tracking down those responsible will take time due to other commitments.

Madang Provincial Police Commander, Sylvester Kalaut, said the robberies are all likely to be inside jobs, and with this it will take some time for the police investigators to track down the suspects.

Officer in charge of the Criminal Investigations Division, Detective Steven Yalamu, said there was an incident where his team received a call about the robbery of the National Development Bank, while they were attending to the robbery of the Furent Supermarket within the town area.

This highlights the lack of s currently seen with the Madang police force.

“Currently, 170 police officers altogether are looking out for the more than 500,000 men, women and children of Madang. This means the ratio of one police officer is to 2,700 citizens in the province,” said Kalaut.

“We have sleepless nights, little or no family time at all, and long working hours around the clock,” said Detective Yalamu.

Both the PPC, Kalaut and Yalamu are calling on the public in Madang to support and supply information about any criminal activities, to help in providing a safer Madang for all.
