Morobe Governor Calls For Tougher Action On Drink Driving

Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, says the careless driver who hit and killed four girls at Lae’s Cassia Crescent must be punished.

“I appeal to the Lae Police to make sure that the full force of the law be brought down on these culprits who have brought unnecessary lose of life through their careless behaviour.”

Whilst the Provincial Government will assist where it can during the families time of mourning.

Naru has issued stern instructions to the Provincial Administration to terminate public servants caught drink driving.

“As I speak now, the Provincial Administrator and line managers have been instructed that if a driver is found drink driving there is no room for them in the public service in Morobe.”

A man driving a newly bought Local level Government vehicle meant for the Kabwum district is understood to have been drunk and speeding.

He hit five young women, and killed four girls at Lae’s Cassia Crescent. A mother and her baby survived.

Police who inspected the car said there were signs of drink driving.

Eyewitnesses said the car was speeding.

In a separate incident on Friday, a young man was killed in Lae when a fincshhafen local level government car driven by a man severely intoxicated capsized. Four passengers survived.
