New Morobe Township MoA signed

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed betweenthe Office of Urbanization andthe Morobe Provincial Government markingthe initial steps towardsthe development of a new township at Umi inthe Markham valley.

The agreement signed bythe Markham MP and Housing Minister, Paul Esekiel and Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru spells outthe corporation betweenthe arms of government responsible for the development.

 

Umi will become a growth center in a new agricultural economic zone.

 

Several thousand hectares of land has been allocated for a new agricultural growth centre.

 

Already work has begun on an oil palm project but when funding problems are sorted out it’should formthe core of future agricultural projects.

 

Every year overthe next five yearsthe provincial government will also allocate two million kina for the feasibility studies and ther work.

 

The first people who will settle at UMI will be government officers and police. It won’t look like much but over twenty years UMI is expected to become a major trading point for agriculture commodities as well as services.
