PNG to host 2014 Melanesian Arts Festival
Papua New Guinea will host the 5th Melanesian Festival of Arts and Culture in 2014.
Cabinet approved of the event was announced yesterday by Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Boka Kondra.
The NEC has earmarked over K50 million to prepare for the festival. The festival adds to the list of major events to be held in the country over the next three years.
Next month, the country will host the Youth Ministers Conference, and in 2015 the 15th South Pacific Games.
Most of the festival activities will be held in Port Moresby, but there are also plans for some exhibitions in selected provinces.
Minister Kondra said the festival preserved and protected our cultures in the face of globalization. Something the Melanesian Spearhead Group has long advocated.
The festival will be organized by a National Melanesian Arts and Culture Committee, and coordinated by the National Cultural Commission. The National Events Ministry will also be involved in preparation for the festival.
