PM O’Neill extends wishes as Australia celebrates National Day

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, has extended his best wishes to the people of Australia on their National Day.

In a statement, PM O’Neill says PNG’s relationship with Australia will continue to be strengthened and improved.

He says Australia is the largest investor and bilateral engagement will continue as in the past 4 decades.

“Australia is the largest investor in the Papua New Guinea economy, and this is creating jobs and stimulating business.

“More and more Papua New Guineans are studying in Australia and this not only enhances skills and knowledge in the short term, it also establishes long-term bonds between our people into the future.”

The Prime Minister said the close relationship between Papua New Guinea and Australia was in many ways born through the hardship and loss of war.

“Our people fought side by side and thousands died in the defence of our two lands during World War Two.

“From this shared history we carry mutual respect and affinity that is always present in the interaction between Papua New Guineans and Australians.”

PM O’Neill said the relationship between Papua New Guinea and Australia is stronger today than it has ever been, and this will only continue to improve.

“Papua New Guinea and Australia are the strongest of partners and friends, and our country extends our fondest regards on Australia Day,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister says the bond with Australia will be enhanced as PNG prepares to host the 2018 APEC Summit come November.,
