Polye: Upskill Pacific Islanders

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Opposition Leader, Don Polye, has called on Pacific islanders to further their skills in an effort to carry out major infrastructure projects and other economic activities in the region.

Polye said that people from other regions too often supervise major infrastructure development throughout Pacific countries, and the indigenous pacific islanders have only played spectating roles for far too long.

β€œThe pressure to complete a given project on time has always forced governments of Pacific countries to engage specialists from outside the region to supervise the projects,” said Polye.

He said most Pacific governments lack the drive to empower indigenous people, and their professional interests continue to be over looked.

The Kandep MP says there are not enough skilled entrepreneurs in Papua New Guinea to head major infrastructure developments in major towns and cities, or act as economic advisors in the economic boom the nation is experiencing.

Polye has again called on Australia and New Zealand to assist pacific countries into upskill islanders to play leading roles in the economic developments of their countries.
