Olsem Wanem – Safe Shelter Workshop on Trobriand Island-Milne Bay Province | EP11 S6, 2017

In this episode:

We again feature the importance of having appropriate shelters that can withstand extreme weather conditions in Papua New Guinea.

The International Organization for Migration/IOM has been conducting safe shelter workshops in various Provinces across PNG. The last leg of the workshop took place on the Trobriand Island in Milne Bay Province.

Participants who attended the safe shelter workshop came from Kawa and Konia communities in the Simsimla Ward and Ware Island. During the workshop they identified the types of natural disasters that are frequent in their respective areas and came up with strategies to minimize the associated impacts.

IOM engaged the Humanitarian Benchmark Consulting/HBC to facilitate the safe shelter workshop. The facilitators now speak of what they have seen upon doing assessments on the selected communities considered to be vulnerable to natural disasters.

We also feature a short segment of a film produced by the International Organization for Migration in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development, better known as USAID, called Hazards in Papua New Guinea.
