Sports Minister Responds to Availability of Venues

By Elijah Lavett – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

Minister for Sports, Justin Tkatchenko, responded to comments made by Port Moresby rugby league chairman Dr. James Naipao yesterday regarding venue accessibility.

Dr. Naipao said yesterday that financial costs for venues are far too excessive, making them out of reach for those wanting to use the spaces for competition.

He said that local sportsmen and sportswomen in will not benefit, using the example of his own competition being played at Murray Barracks Oval instead of at these newly built venues.

Minister Tkatchenko responded yesterday saying the whole purpose of re-building the Lloyd Robson Oval is for the local competitions.

He said the oval is built particularly for the Port Moresby rugby league competition and the Intercity Cup competition, with the possibility of also staging PNG Hunters matches at the venue as well.
