Toua Udia Cleared Of Sexual Assault Charges

PNG Weightlifter Toua Udia, who was alleged to have been involved in sexual assault in Glasgow, Scotland, was proved innocent by the president magistrate of the Glasgow Sheriff’s Court yesterday due to insufficient evidence provided by the Scottish/British complainant.

Udia was arrested two days after the opening ceremony for allegedly molesting a local man in the toilet of a shop near the athletes’ village.

The Hanuabada lifter denied the allegation, which led to him being detained and spending a night in police custody.

The magistrate noted that Udia’s demeanour after the alleged incident was calm as reported by the complainant’s witnesses who also admitted to his re-entering the supermarket.

This was acknowledged by the magistrate as not the conduct of a guilty offender, as well as the fact that the evidence provided was not from a firsthand witness.

Therefore he has been set free, which has been a big relief for himself and his career, including his coach, Team PNG and the PNG High Commission in London.
