Closed Yonki Kol Wara Section Sees Frustration From Commuters Over Payment for Safe Passage

by Bethanie Harriman – EM TV News, Highlands

The Yonki Kol Wara section of the Highlands Highway remains closed, with commuters sharing their frustrations with regard to paying landowners for safe passage.

Delays have been caused thanks to a bogged truck, which after nearly one week was finally removed this afternoon.

Police are on the scene to provide some level of security, with many passengers jumping off PMV buses and walking to either side of the damaged section of the road.

“They are charging [a] hundred kina for us to travel,” said John Timbi, a bus driver travelling along the Highlands Highway.

The drivers say they fear for the safety of both their passengers and their buses, and reluctantly pay the amount being asked of them.

The National Works Department have inspected the area, but those on the scene are demanding urgent government intervention.
