Youth employment programme helps youths

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV, Port Moresby

Hundreds of youths in Port Moresby are thankful for the NCD Youth Employment Program.

Following its launch in 2011, more unemployed youths have been given an opportunity to be employed.

For many, it’s a life changing experience. Many of them have stayed out of school and are grateful for the programme.

David Mentei, who lives in Gordons, is one of the youths undergoing this program.
The program has offered him a choice to become a better citizen and stay away from petty crime.

“I used to commit petty crimes but this program has given me a positive look at how I can be a good person,” David said.

Under this program, NCDC has contracted a number of contractors, including Aku Enterprise Limited to supervise and mentor youths while out on contracted jobs. Aku Enterprise’s senior supervisor, Ian Bouwe said he provides mentoring and urges the youths to practice good attitudes.

“I emphasis on good attitudes and proper manners and in all my operations, I encourage youths to think of safety every day,” Bouwe said.

Today, youths from the Gordons, Erima and other North East areas cleaned up roads and drains in the Five Mile residential area.

The program provides an income for the youths and opportunities to seek better employment in industrial and business sectors.

Henry Raymond was one of the first youths who underwent the program in 2011.

Today, he is attached with Aku Contractors and is heading the supervision of the youths. The youths clean the city in scopes and aim to complete the Five Mile area come Friday.
