55 Break Out From Buimo Jail

by Bethanie Harriman – EM TV, Lae

A total of 55 prisoners have escaped from Lae’s Buimo Jail during today’s down pour.

46 are still at large, 9 have been recaptured and one was shot dead.

Buimo Commander, Judy Tara, released these numbers this afternoon after an update.

The majority of those who escaped were thirty-four remandees and twelve convicts.

Police and Correctional Service personnel were out today searching for the escapees.

Possible escape routes along the Bumbu River, East and West Taraka including Nawae block are being monitored for disturbances.

By 2pm in the afternoon members of the correctional service were conducting role checks to establish who broke out.

Police were there at the Buimo Jail and have confirmed a breakout.

In April 2013, fourty-four prisoners on remand broke out from Buimo.

One was shot dead, while nineteen others were recaptured.

A month later, fourty-eight prisoners escaped from the Madang’s Beon Jail.

The cause of the breakouts have been blamed on the poor state of Buimo’s infrastructure.

The 2013 escapees were able to climb over rusting fence and escape on foot into nearby settlements.

Sources from inside Buimo Jail say that the breakout today was similar to that of 2013.

Buimo Commander, Judy Tara, says a report will be released with the names and details of those still at large to the Lae Business community.
