Illegal water connections closed

By Meleasie Goviro – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The restoration of water supply to the Laloki Psychiatric Hospital is underway.

Communities between the Laloki Bridge and the hospital facility are working together with the hospital staff and police to dig up and disconnect illegal water connections to the hospital’s main pipeline.

They said they were unaware of the effect their connections have on the hospitals supply of water and were happy to help fix the problem.

It has been a very peaceful operation.

However, they were concerned that when these pipes are closed, it will be difficult for them to find water.

They were assured by the hospital staff that the sooner these connections were closed, the sooner communal taps could be established.

For subsistence farmers like Jimmy Turua, it was essential because he needed water to tend his garden.

Like many residents in the area, he depends on cash crops as a source of income.

The hospital staff are working around the clock to complete this project before the new year commences.
