By Delly Bagu-EMTV, Port Moresby

A private funeral service was held in Port Moresby for the respected radio announcer, William Mairi.

Family, close friends and former colleagues from the media were there to pay their last respects.

The late William Mairi was more popularly known to the Motuan audience as “W tamona bona M tamona”.

His distinct voice and stylish, almost hypnotic presentations also landed him the name “Mauswara Mairi”.

Those at the funeral heard that Mairi was the eldest of six, born to Reverend Robert and Naime Mairi. He was educated up to grade 6 at the Hagara Community School.

But it was his love of reading, unique ‘announcers’ voice and pure determination that took him from being a car salesman to a master of the airwaves with Radio Central, FM Central, FM Morobe, Kalang FM and finally Lalokau FM.

He also worked as News Presenter for a year at EM TV.

His daughter Sarah described him as a hero. The late William Mairi, died in the Philippines on March 26, after succumbing to a stroke. He is survived by his wife and six children.
