Volcanic Expert says No More Threats by Volcanoes in Wewak

A volcanic expert says there is no possibility of a chain reaction or explosion by the volcanic islands in Wewak.

Principal Geodetic Surveyor at the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory, Steve Saunders, told EMTV the Volcano Islands are not connected, despite their close proximity to each other.

He says, however, relocating islanders is a necessary safety measure.

Mr. Saunders says Kadovar, Biem and Ruprup are in no way connected. He says the first explosion on Kadovar had initially raised concerns of a bigger explosion, however the threat level has been relatively low.

Kadovar, Ruprup and Biem Islands are all situated in the Shouten Group of Islands.

According to Mr. Saunders, Kadovar and Biem erupted years back but not on the same occasion. Mr. Saunders says, currently there is no way a double explosion is likely to happen.

The Rabaul Volcanological Observatory has sent a team to assess the progress of volcanic activities in Wewak.

Saunders says an awareness program will also be carried out so islanders and community leaders know the level of threat by the volcanic islands.
